Restriping Parking LotsWhen a business restripes a parking lot, it must provide accessible parking spaces as required by the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Here are some of the considerations: Accessible parking spaces serving a particular building should be located on the shortest accessible route of travel from adjacent parking to an accessible entrance. If the parking facility does not serve a particular building, accessible parking should be located on the shortest accessible route of travel to an accessible pedestrian entrance of the parking facility. For more information and the complete list of regulations, go to www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/stdspdf.htm.
5 Areas of ConcernWhen planning right of way and accessibility, make sure to include — and address — these five points in your planning. 1. Curb ramp obstructions These
points were covered in a story by Michele S. Ohmes, ADA/Disability Specialist,
City of Kansas City, MO. Perhaps we could solicit an article from her
with photos to include in the Learning Center. ADA Tax IncentivesThe Federal Government provides some tax incentives for meeting ADA requirements. Make sure to talk with your lawyer and/or accountant if you’re planning any improvements at your facility.
ADA Information LineYou can order copies of ADA publications, audio tapes, and computer disks by calling 800-514-0301 (voice) or 800-514-0383 (TDD).
